Basic concepts for reading clinical trial information

Trial pages often include phase, eligibility, locations and contacts. Understanding these concepts helps avoid overinterpretation.

Clinical trials have defined research purposes

Clinical trials follow research protocols and may evaluate drugs, devices, diagnostics, procedures or care processes. Trial phase and design affect the meaning of risk, benefit and evidence.

Patients should not assume a trial is automatically the newest or better treatment option.

Eligibility criteria are central

Trial pages usually list inclusion and exclusion criteria, such as disease type, stage, mutation, prior treatment, organ function, age and performance status. Eligibility must be reviewed by the study team.

Meeting some criteria does not guarantee enrollment.

Contacts are for research inquiry, not medical advice

Public trial registries provide locations and contacts so people can learn about studies. Before contacting a study team, prepare the diagnosis, treatment timeline and key results.

InnoCare can support public-entry research and question organization, but does not assess trial suitability.
