M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (MD Anderson Cancer Center) was established in 1941 and is located in Houston, Texas, in the southern United States. It is a world-renowned cancer specialty hospital and one of the three comprehensive cancer treatment centers designated by the U.S. "Cancer Action" plan in 1971. It is also one of the 39 comprehensive cancer treatment centers designated by the Oncology Society. It is a world center for cancer diagnosis, treatment, and research.

MD Anderson Cancer Center has over 18,000 employees, including more than 1,500 doctors and over 500 hospital beds. It admits more than 19,000 inpatients from the United States and other countries each year, with a daily outpatient volume of 1,800 visits. Over 79,000 cancer patients receive treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center each year, about one-third of whom come from outside Texas. More than 11,000 patients participate in the clinical research trials at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

In 2008, the center treated a total of 90,000 cancer patients, of whom 30,000 were new patients from 93 countries and regions. These patients included political figures and business elites from around the world. For example, Lee Kun-Hee, the former chairman of Samsung Group and the richest man in South Korea, underwent surgery and subsequent treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center for lung cancer in 2000.

The center offers cancer patients a range of treatments, including targeted therapies, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, proton therapy, immunotherapy, and combination therapies. Interdisciplinary teams of experts work closely together to develop comprehensive treatment plans for patients.

MD Anderson Cancer Center invests over $400 million annually in basic medical research and has a large number of research projects funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). In 2005, the research funding at MD Anderson Cancer Center reached $342 million. The center currently has funding for 10 NCI-designated research projects, including brain tumors, pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, leukemia, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, lung cancer, and melanoma. Each year, more than 1,100 clinical residents receive professional training in cancer research and treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

For many years, MD Anderson Cancer Center has provided Chinese oncologists with the opportunity to learn advanced technologies from around the world. Almost every hospital in China has sent doctors to MD Anderson Cancer Center for further study. Many well-known oncology experts from major hospitals in China have trained at MD Anderson Cancer Center. For example, Academician Sun Yan, an expert at the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, a well-known institution for cancer treatment in China, has also trained there.
