The National Children's Hospital was founded in 1870 in Washington, D.C. When it first opened, the hospital had only 12 beds to care for orphans from the American Civil War. But now, the National Children's Hospital has a history of more than 150 years , with 323 beds and more than 600 full-time pediatricians, making it one of the top ten children's hospitals in the United States .

In order to provide medical references for patients around the world, US News & World Report, one of the three major news weeklies in the United States, updates and publishes a ranking of American hospitals every year. In its 2020-21 comprehensive ranking of American children's hospitals released in 2020, National Children's Hospital ranked seventh in the United States, and neonatal care ranked first in the United States for four consecutive years ; the top 10 departments are: neonatal care, neurology & neurosurgery, cancer, nephrology, orthopedics, pulmonary medicine & pulmonary surgery, diabetes and endocrinology.
The hospital has twice been designated as a Magnet® hospital , demonstrating the highest standards in pediatric care and patient care.

Additionally, the hospital has been actively leading innovative solutions to pediatric health challenges . Home to the National Children's Research Institute (CNRI) and the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation, Children's National is the seventh-largest children's hospital funded by the National Institutes of Health.
The hospital’s Research and Innovation Campus, a dedicated pediatric research and innovation hub that brings together public and private partners to translate scientific breakthroughs into new treatments and technologies that benefit children, welcomed its first resident, the Rare Diseases Institute, in February 2021.
